Neal Nickel
1955 ~ 2008 Neal Nickel, our Dad, Grandpa, husband, uncle and friend passed away in West Valley City on September 27, 2008 at the age of 53. Neal endured the challenges of frontotemporal dementia and ALS for several years prior to his death.Neal was born in Salt Lake City on July 3, 1955, to Oliver and Melda Nickel. He married Laura Murphy on September 26, 1973 in the Salt Lake Temple. Neal worked in the airline industry, first for Western, then Delta, then Southwest Airlines. His most cherished profession and his greatest wealth, however, was that of father to his seven children. He spent countless hours teaching them how to stand in the box, keep their eye on the ball, swing for the fences, and follow through. He gave up most of his hobbies and interests in order to better their lives. He loved taking them to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, camping, to the batting cages, golfing, or just to the store for a Dr. Pepper Big Gulp. They all looked forward to Neal leading the annual excursion to look at Christmas lights all over the valley on Christmas Eve, and perhaps even more to the giant breakfast he would make on Christmas morning. He devoted every ounce of energy he had to being Dad, and we will always remember the way he would greet us with a big smile and a "what's up?" Neal's family is grateful for the sacrifices he made to give us memories of him until we meet again, and for his unconditional example of kindness and service to others. He is survived by his wife, Laura, their children Greg, Candi (Tim) McCoy, Katie, Camille, Celeste (Patrick) Floyd, Abbie (Jason) Richman and Colton, and by grandchildren Jake, Alex, Sam, Aaron, Riley, Andrew and Elsa. A viewing honoring Neal will be held Oct. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Hunter Central Stake Center, 3930 South 6000 West, West Valley City. Funeral services will be held on October 2, at 12:00 noon at the Hunter Central Stake Center. Interment following the service at Valley View Memorial Park in West Valley City. Arrangements provided by Valley View Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank the many doctors, healthcare providers and friends who have spent time and effort to make Dad as comfortable as possible during the past several months.
